Whisky has been a staple spirit in cocktail making since the early 1800s when the basic whisky cocktail of spirit, sugars, bitters and water was used. In the 1840 the whisky smash was developed using citrus fruits, before becoming popular again in the 1990s in New York by bartender Dale DeGroff.
